Greetings from Australia,
I was saddened to hear of the passing of my great tante Anneke. She had been a household name in my childhood, and I was fortunate to be able to visit her in Pinjum in 2003 – I cant believe that was almost 20 years ago. She was a wonderful host, speaking to me in my fathers language (which I didn’t understand!), keeping me feeling close to him even though I had been away from him for almost 6 months. At 80 years old she rode bikes to church with me – me as a 23 year old struggling to keep up with her, oom Gotse and tante Grete. She introduced me to my extended family, and showed me the paths and buildings of my dads childhood. It felt like a right of passage to spend time with her, and I felt like I was ‘on country’ – the term indigenous Australians use when they return to their homelands.
Thank you for sharing this for us all around the world to be part of.
Regards,
